Gillz Café on Alexandra Street in Te Awamutu is a relaxed spot where locals seem to gather for a solid coffee fix and casual breakfasts or lunches. The café offers a blend of indoor seating and a sunny outdoor area that welcomes dogs, making it a practical choice for residents who want to enjoy a morning coffee or a lazy afternoon meet-up while their furry friends relax alongside.

The coffee is a clear draw here, with regulars commenting on the consistent quality thanks to a small group of familiar baristas who keep standards steady, unlike some places where the taste can vary with the staff on shift. Drinks like their flat white and hot chocolate get particular mentions, hinting that the café takes its beans seriously.

Food-wise, the menu includes straightforward café fare with some standouts like the eggs benedict with salmon and the kumara rosti with bacon and mushrooms. The atmosphere is unpretentious and clean, with friendly, attentive staff who are willing to accommodate and even replace dishes if something isn’t quite right. Went for Breakfast. Was very pleased to see lots of choices. I had the kumara rosti with bacon and mushrooms. My husband had the mushrooms on toast. Drinks were good. Place was clean. Hubby would personally prefer fancier bread for his toast. If they wanted any hints I'd change the light shades and add some more plants.great spot and nice service. I'd definitely go back.

Amazing staff who are super friendly with great customer service! It’s a well located cafe with indoor and outdoor options as well as being dog friendly and having the best hot chocolates in town.

A delightful cafe with a very good atmosphere. Obviously popular with the locals by the looks of it (I was visiting from Hamilton). The lady behind the counter was very pleasant, and the mushrooms and bacon I had were great. Good coffee also.

We live locally and love coming in to Gillz. I come in regularly for coffee because it is always consistently good. When you go to other cafes, there’s multiple different people who make the coffee and you don’t know how it’s going to taste, but at Gillz they have same few staff who make awesome coffee. We love sitting outside with our dog because it’s always sunny and a nice spot on the main street of Te Awamutu.

Went in for lunch and coffee. Coffee was very good, but the salmon frittata seemed undercooked, and had a very strong smell. I alerted the server, who assured me it was fine , but offered to replace it with a different frittata which she did, and it was much better. So great customer service, and has a nice atmosphere and reasonable prices.
